Salam is a way of greeting when you meet another Muslim whether you know them or not. The proper way of Salam is saying Asalamu Alaikum(Peace be upon you), Asalamu Alikum Warahmatullah(Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you) or Asalamu Alikum Warahmatullah Wabarakatoh(Peace, mercy and blessing of Allah be upon you).
